The community is invited to attend a presentation by public artist Gordon Huether on Monday July 31 at 6:00 p.m. in the City Council Chambers located at 1175 East Main Street. Mr. Huether will present two design concepts for the Theater Corridor.
The Theater Corridor, a pedestrian walkway leading from Main Street to Thomas Theater, was identified by the Downtown Beautification Commission as a space that needed improvements and that would benefit from a public art installation.
In July of 2016, the Public Art Commission published a Call for Artists/Request for Qualifications inviting professional artists to submit their qualification for consideration of the project. Twenty-eight responses were received. The list was narrowed to four artists and based on the artists’ experience, aesthetics, interview and references, Gordon Huether was selected. Information about the Theater Corridor public art project, including Mr. Huether’s response to the RFQ, is available here.
The vision for this project is an original, permanent installation of contemporary art. The finished theater corridor project is meant to enhance the barren pedestrian corridor and transform it into a lighted artful walking experience encouraging exploration and use of the walkway both day and night.
A Selection Panel, independent of the Public Art Commission will select one of the two concepts as its recommendation to the City Council. The City Council will make its decision at its meeting on September 5.
