Firewise Communities
Firewise Communities/USA is a national program that emphasizes homeowner responsibility and community participation in wildfire home safety. It encourages local solutions for wildfire safety by involving homeowners, community leaders, planners, developers, firefighters, and others in the effort to protect people and property from the risk of wildfire. To save lives and property from wildfire, the National Fire Protection Association's NFPA Firewise Communities/USA program teaches people how to adapt to living with wildfire and encourages neighbors to work together and take action now to prevent losses.

Ashland is the leader for the state of Oregon with 24 recognized Firewise Communities/USA neighborhoods within the city limits. Ashland's first 7 communities were created in 2011 and the program has taken off since then.

Working with fire professionals, neighborhoods in the City of Ashland can earn Firewise Communities/USA status by meeting the following requirements.

  • Enlist the Fire Adapted Communities Coordinator to complete a community assessment and create a plan that identifies agreed-upon achievable solutions to be implemented by the community.
  • Sponsor a local Firewise Task Force Committee, Commission or Department which maintains the Firewise Community/USA program and tracks its progress or status.
  • Observe a Firewise Communities/USA Day each year that is dedicated to a local Firewise project.
  • Invest a minimum of $2.00 per capita annually in local Firewise projects.  (Work by municipal employees or volunteers using municipal and other equipment can be included, as can state/federal grants dedicated to that purpose).
  • Submit an annual online report to Firewise Communities/USA that documents continuing compliance with the program.

Firewise Communities/USA program provides residents of the wildland/urban interface (WUI) with the knowledge and skill necessary to make it happen. By addressing home construction, landscaping and preparedness, Firewise can make the difference. When adequately prepared, a house can withstand a wildland fire without the intervention of the fire service. In fact, a house and its surrounding community can be both Firewise and compatible with the area's ecosystem.

The Firewise Communities/USA recognition program enables communities in all parts of the United States to achieve a high level of protection against wildfire as well as sustainable ecosystem balance.

This program will provides a workable framework by instituting fire protection program that encourages local solutions to the issue of unwanted wildfire.  It educates citizens about wildfires and the associated subject of home ignition.  By implementing the program standards, citizens participate in a management approach that ensures they have timely, accurate and useful information.  In addition, it improves a community’s sense of civic responsibility by requiring citizen commitment to maintaining a Firewise environment.  In essence, neighborhoods work together with fire and emergency personnel to develop strategies for protecting themselves and their property.
